President's Note

Hello SWE-NESS!

The month of February is usually a busy one for SWE-NESS due to Engineers Week. This year, Engineers Week takes place from February 14-20.

Several activities are occurring this month, including the library outreach and “Be an Engineer” workshop. Hopefully, you have already contacted Sue Anderson about setting up an engineering book display at your local library. In the past, the librarians have been grateful for SWE’s help in these displays. These events also bring to the forefront any science and engineering books that may have been hiding.

The other big event this month is the “Be An Engineer” Workshop at the Providence Children’s Museum taking place on February 20. This event consists of five stations, each representing a different engineering discipline (electrical, software, chemical, mechanical and civil). Please contact Sue Anderson if you are interested in volunteering for this event. We not only need volunteers for the stations, but also to greet the children as they enter the room and give them engineering-related goodies.

Coming up in March, we have the Girl Scout Senior Leadership Conference. This differs from the Girl Scout Workshops because we interact with high school students from all over the east coast. Again, we are always looking for volunteers. If you are interested in finding out the topics that will be discussed, do not hesitate to contact Sue Anderson.

The Executive Council is always looking for new ideas for professional development, networking and membership events. If you have an idea or comments do not hesitate to contact me. I hope to see and meet many of you at an event soon!

The engineer is the key figure in the material progress of the world. It is his engineering that makes a reality of the potential value of science by translating scientific knowledge into tools, resources, energy and labor to bring them into the service of man ... To make contributions of this kind the engineer requires the imagination to visualize the needs of society and to appreciate what is possible as well as the technological and broad social age understanding to bring his vision to reality.
