President’s Message February

Engineer’s Week 2012

Beth Lavoie – President

“7 billion people. 7 billion dreams. 7 billion chances for engineers to turn dreams into reality.” Wow! What a theme to anchor the 2012 National Engineers Week (February 19-25). This year’s theme is a nod to the projected human population of 7 billion people residing on our planet.  Once again, SWE-NESS is delighted to join the E-Week mission of spreading the word that engineering is a pretty groovy! If you were one of the members or friends that volunteered for the NESS Library Outreach Program, then you are part of NESS’s E-Week event docket. It is a great way to introduce children and parents in our community to the engineering world, and we thank our library volunteers for joining in on the fun!

SWE-NESS is also working with both the Providence Children’s Museum and the Niantic Children’s Museum in running Be an Engineer workshops. NESS members and friends are encouraged to volunteer at these workshops. The workshops provide instant gratification to volunteers when they see a child’s eyes light up with understanding, or those goofy grins of pure enjoyment. It’s not too late to sign up!  Check out the On the Calendar article for contact information to volunteer.

Finally, I would like to share my favorite E-Week initiative – Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day . This year Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day lands on Thursday, February 23rd.  If you can’t volunteer with one of NESS’s E-Week events, perhaps you can make your own E-Week celebration by reaching out to a girl near you and letting her know that engineering is pretty groovy!

Until we talk again… enjoy life!
