Collegiate Section News
We are very excited to announce that the United States Coast Guard Academy has officially been reinstated as a SWE Collegiate Section attached to SWE-NESS!
The announcement was made in May, via a letter from SWE Executive Director, Betty Shanahan.
The following is a report from CGA NESS Advisor, Michele Fitzpatrick: During the school year, the Section met roughly once every three weeks. Since August, in addition to the campus meetings, members have: attended a banquet held by the URI Collegiate Section and a panel discussion sponsored by Electric Boat’s Women in Defense group; they have taken a tour of the oldest operating steam cider press at Clyde’s Cider Mill in Mystic; volunteered at the SWE-NESS Girl Scout Badge Workshop at Conn College; and had a Christmas party complete with Secret Santas. They planned and executed a major professional development event honoring the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic and the ensuing creations of maritime safety regulations and the formation of the International Ice patrol (IIP), both of which are under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Coast Guard. The event featured speakers from the IIP and exhibits relating to maritime safety and the Titanic. There were 72 attendees, including 50 cadets, 7 SWE-NESS members, and guests from other organizations.
